Machines / V-Screen Separator

Recent Editorial regarding the first UK V-Screen installed.

Ken Mills Engineering Ltd has installed a US designed screen for the first time in the UK at a new Norwich Materials recycling facility. The screen does three jobs in one, removing paper, fines and Plastic & tins. Ensuring that waste material is separated quickly and efficiently, with a good quality end-material is vital for modern materials recycling facilities (MRF). That’s why Norwich-based M.W. Whites chose Ken Mills Engineering latest screen design - the US-produced V-screen. Ken Mills Engineering has been manufacturing and supplying baling presses, conveyors and shredders to the recycling industry for more than 24 years. But according to sales executive Andrew Mills the V-screen is a completely new screen design where the discs run at 90° to the product flow. “The main reason for this is to minimise the space required for the large production. The machine’s floor area measures just 9m2, lending itself to a compact, high production system. “The quality of the product can be controlled very finely with the angle adjustment of the disc arrangement, the angle of the total machine and the speed of the discs,” he added. Managing director Paul White told MRW that the company had been looking at several combinations for the MRF’s expansion. “But the V-screen gave us a better separation and better quality of material.” Mills added: “It does three jobs in one. It’s the latest thing and Whites is only the fourth or fifth installed in the world.” However, there are plans for a second UK V-screen to be installed in the next few months.

Process Mixed waste - including paper, card, plastic bottles and mixed cans - is pushed into a feed-metering conveyor that controls the flow up onto the main inclined belt. The first sorting position removes the waste card and the second removes large waste and any other foreign objects. The mixed material then feeds directly into the V- screen. Fines and small waste items fall from the base, while the newspaper and magazines are sorted over the top of the disc screen. Plastic bottles and cans continue along the base of the discs, which are fed back onto the second sorting line. Cans and bottles are separated through the use of magnets. An overhand magnet removes the steel cans, while an eddy current separator removes the aluminium from the plastic bottles. Aluminium cans are then fed through a used beverage can-baling machine. Mills said: “The whole system was designed and installed by ourselves and is very cost effective.” White added: “The V-screen is basically three machines in one, making it cost effective for us. “And now that it’s up and running - and the screen is now working very well - we are looking to increase production through the machine and gain new contracts."

Advantages of the V-ScreenTM

The V Screen™ technology is the most advanced container/paper separator in the industry. CP Manufacturing’s patented V Screen™ separator is a  groundbreaking technological advancement that will changed the shape of  ingle-stream processing.

  1. Twice the throughput than our CP Screen version or any similar competition [ex: banana style shape or tilted] capacity between  14 to 18 Metric TPH depending on the material composition and material density. Available with 12 ft long or longer version

  2. Up to 3 times the effective screening surface.

  3. Reduced labor costs for cleaning the separator [Extremely low because of the design of the separator]

  4. Easier, Safer Maintenance  Decks fold vertically and Separator can be ay flat So no risk of falling back on an inclined deck

  5. Cleanest container stream in the industry

  6. Patented traction-control air systems

  7. Multiple screen-angle adjustments

  8. Improved container egress path to deliver the best screening, less glass breakage and the most efficient sort possible.

  9. Patented, compound discs last up to 300% longer [proven]

  10. Two-piece discs for quick replacement

  11. Easily removable shafts
